Kedarnath is a significant pilgrimage town located in the Rudraprayag district of the state of Uttarakhand in northern India. It holds immense religious and cultural importance in Hinduism and is renowned for the Kedarnath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (sacred abodes of Lord Shiva) in India.

Here are some key points about Kedarnath:

Kedarnath Temple: The Kedarnath Temple is the primary attraction in the town. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is situated at an altitude of around 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) above sea level. The temple is known for its stunning architecture and natural surroundings. Due to its high altitude, the temple is open to visitors only during the summer months (usually from April to November), while during the winter, the temple area remains covered in snow and is inaccessible.

Pilgrimage: Kedarnath is a prominent pilgrimage site for Hindus, especially followers of Lord Shiva. It is considered one of the Char Dham Yatra destinations, along with Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri. These four pilgrimage sites are believed to provide spiritual liberation when visited by devout Hindus.

Access: Kedarnath is not easily accessible by road directly. Visitors usually have to reach Gaurikund, which is the base for the trek to Kedarnath. From Gaurikund, it's approximately a 16-kilometer (10-mile) trek to the temple. Helicopter services are also available for those who want to avoid the trek.

Natural Beauty: Kedarnath is set amidst the stunning landscapes of the Himalayas. The journey to Kedarnath offers breathtaking views of the mountains, valleys, and rivers. The town is located near the Mandakini River, which adds to its picturesque charm.

2013 Flash Floods: In June 2013, Kedarnath and the surrounding region were severely affected by flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rainfall. The disaster led to significant loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and damage to the Kedarnath Temple and its surroundings. Since then, extensive restoration and rebuilding efforts have been undertaken to revive the area and ensure the safety of pilgrims.

Tourism: Aside from its religious significance, Kedarnath has also become a popular tourist destination for its natural beauty and trekking opportunities. The surrounding region offers various trekking routes and trails that attract adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers.
